West of Scotland Adult Cystic Fibrosis Service
Welcome to Ward 7A and Ward 7D at QEUH!
There may be times when you are unwell and need to come into hospital.

You may be used to coming into hospital either for clinics or to stay in the ward - if so welcome back!
This may be your first time in hospital and it may feel strange to start with - please feel free to ask the CF team or the staff on your ward if you have any questions or are not sure about anything - we will be happy to help!

We have put together an information pack to provide you with more details about the wards and your inpatient stay.
All patients at the QEUH are accommodated in single rooms with private bathrooms.

If this is your first visit to the ward there are volunteers based at the main entrance who can help with directions.

On occasion you may need to be cared for by a different specialty. If you are admitted to another ward within the QEUH the CF team will keep in close contact with the specialty looking after you.
How long will I have to wait for a bed?
Our aim is always to admit you directly to Ward 7A or Ward 7D.
If you are waiting to come into hospital we will update you (usually every day) regarding the bed situation. If you feel you are becoming more unwell while waiting for a bed please let us know.

Rarely if you need to come into hospital urgently we may ask you to go directly to your nearest A&E department.
What do I need to bring with me?
-
Clothes and toiletries (emergency toiletries are available if required)
-
All your regular medications
-
Any physiotherapy equipment you use regularly at home
-
Your nebuliser if you have one
-
Your NIV machine if you have one
-
Your blood glucose monitor if you have one
What happens when I come in?
You will be admitted to hospital by a doctor - this involves asking some questions about the issue that has brought you into hospital, checking your medical history and your regular medications with you, and carrying out a physical examination. If you require blood tests these will be taken and any other tests organised.

If you are admitted out of hours you may be seen by one of the on call medical team - they will normally be aware of the reason for your admission and have a plan from the CF team.
Monday-Friday one of the CF consultants will see you on the ward round usually on the day after you are admitted (this may be in the morning or the afternoon).

Physiotherapy In Hospital
Sputum Samples
With cystic fibrosis you are more vulnerable to different bacteria or 'bugs', which grow in your lungs. While these bugs are usually harmless to people who don't have cystic fibrosis, they can settle in the lungs (colonise) and be harmful for those who do.
These bugs can be easily transmitted from one person with cystic fibrosis to another. For this reason, sputum samples will be collected by the physiotherapists on the day that you are admitted and on every Monday during your admission. This allows us to keep track of what bugs are found in your spit and can help the medical team decide on the best antibiotic combinations.
Lung Function
Lung Function is performed every Monday afternoon on the ward to assess how well the lungs are working. One of the most common symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis is a decline in lung health.
Lung function is used to help diagnose and monitor patients, which lets the medical team detect any such problems, such as infection, that can worsen the disease. It can also be an indicator of how well antibiotics, physiotherapy and other treatments are working by measuring how well you are progressing.
It is very important that you have your lung function as this is a vital tool in managing your treatments.
